A year ago there might have been no comeback for the Fruitport girls bowling team.

The team was short on experience, lacked confidence and struggled to compete.

But all of those girls came back this year, plus one new player, and they are obviously determined to win a lot more than they did last season.

The latest evidence came on Monday, when the Trojans overcame a big early deficit and snuck past Kelloggsville 17-13 in O-K Silver conference action.

The Trojans are now 2-0 on the season in dual matches, and 1-0 in conference play.

Fruitport started out with a 10-0 deficit after being swept by Kelloggsville in the two baker games. That left little room for error in the rest of the match, but the Trojans answered the challenge in the two regular games.

They prevailed 546-453 in Game 1, earning four points.  Smith, Kyleigh O’Connell and Harper Simila each won their individual matchups in Game 1, adding three more points, and Fruitport trailed 12-7.

O’Connell had the high score in Game 1 with a 149.

The Trojans kept the momentum in Game 2, winning 595-522 and earning four more points. They also collected individual victories from O’Connell, Simila, Gen Franklin and Ava Bradshaw, adding another four points.storage

Bradshaw had the high score in Game 2 with a 153.

At that point Fruitport led 15-13, and the outcome of the match depended on the two bonus points that go to the team with the highest pin total in the combined regular games.

The Trojans won the points and escaped with the victory.

“Our girls team started out a bit slow, but we bounced back with some great individual games,” said Fruitport Coach Tim McKeeby. “I am proud of our team for fighting hard, making the proper adjustments, and cheering each other on to a great victory.”mini
