The Fruitport wrestling team piled up three victories in pool play, then lost twice in the championship rounds, at Saturday’s Zeeland West Invitational.
The Trojans had a lot of success in the first three matches, beating West Ottawa 52-30, Kalamazoo Central 71-9 and Zeeland East 64-15.
That took them to the tournament semifinal round, where they lost to Byron Center 51-22. Fruitport also fell in the third-place match, 40-29 to Hart.
The top wrestler for Fruitport was Chase Rosema, who went 5-0 with four pins at 215 pounds.
Winning four matches for the Trojans were Colton Smith (190), Murphy Lengkeek (144), Zach Aardema (138), Rylan Thorson (113) and Austin Jacobs (106).
Smith and Jacobs pinned their opponents in all four victories.
Winning two matches for Fruitport were Alex Aardema (150), Cooper Lengkeek (157), Luke Westerlund (285) and Emmitt Renauldo (132).
“Our wrestlers showed real resilience,” said Fruitport head coach Chad Johnson. “We looked great throughout pool play and advanced to the semifinals, where we lost to two very well-rounded, ranked teams in Hart and Byron Center. We faced strong competition, learned a lot, and came away better than we started. This group continues to rise to every challenge.”
