The Fruitport girls bowling team did not have a very good season last year, but it looks like the Trojans might be turning the corner.

At least that seemed to be the case on Friday, when they opened the season with a very impressive 22-8 victory over Zeeland East in non-conference action.

The Trojans started out gaining six points by winning one of the two baker games, and earning the two baker bonus points.

Then they won both of the regular games, 805-677 and 807-778, to gain eight more points. Fruitport also got the two bonus points for winning the combined pin battle in both games.

Harper Simila

Ava Bradshaw, Kyleigh O’Connell and Harper Simila each earned one team point by winning their matchups in Game 1. O’Connell had the high score of 124.

Bradshaw, Simila and Gen Franklin were winners in Game 2, earning the Trojans three more points. Simila rolled a very strong 163 .

“Our girls team had its best opening day in the past few years,” said Fruitport Coach Tim McKeeby. “We started off strong and continued bowling our best throughout the whole match. Harper Simila was our most valuable bowler of the day, rolling a 105 and 163 while winning both of her points.”

The Trojans competed in the Jenison Invitational on Saturday and finished in eighth place in the team standings. Maddie Smith was the top Fruitport bowler, finishing 13th individually with a 263 series.ministorage
