Maybe a little breather was exactly what the Fruitport girls basketball team needed.
The Trojans were off for an eight-day holiday break before returning to action on Tuesday, and it seemed to make all the difference.
The Trojans bounced back from a three-game losing streak with an impressive 45-33 victory over Whitehall in a non-conference matchup.
The Trojans jumped out to an early lead with a 13-6 advantage in the first quarter. They outscored the Vikings 12-9 in both the second and third quarters and 11-9 in the fourth.
[1]Junior Izzy Hanson-Wilbur, in her second game back from an ankle injury, led the team with 14 points. First-year player Ciera Fri had a breakout game with 12 points and freshman Regan Wilson added 10 points.
Fruitport improved to 2-3 on the season.
“We got outrebounded all night, but we held in there as a team,” said Fruitport head coach Brian Packard. “Cierra Fri had a breakout game and made some moves that we knew she had in her. Izzy Hanson Wilbur had a nice day with 14. We are asking a lot out of Regan Wilson as a freshman, but she helped lead our zone defense and also got into transition.
“It was a fun game to be a part of and our girls played hard all night and started to really see each other better.”
The Trojans will return to action on Saturday afternoon at Muskegon Catholic Central.
