The Fruitport boys basketball team lost its first game of the season on Tuesday, falling to Mona Shores 53-46 in a tight non-conference battle at home.

A bad first quarter proved to be the difference for the Trojans, who trailed 16-8 at the first buzzer. Fruitport had a 14-9 advantage in the second quarter and only trailed by three points, 25-22, at halftime.

The same three-point margin held up through three quarters, with the Sailors holding a 38-35 lead. Fruitport was unable to close the gap in the last eight minutes.

The Trojans fell to 2-1 on the season, heading into Friday’s road game against rival Spring Lake., Mona Shores improved to 1-2.

“This was an intense game and a good test for us early in the season,” said Fruitport head coach Steve Erny. “It’s disappointing to lose the game, but there will be plenty to learn and get better from. Quick turnaround as we will be getting ready for Spring Lake on Friday night.”ministorage
