Fruitport wrestler Austin Jacobs is only a freshman, with a lot of great moments still ahead in his high school career, but he already has one successful varsity experience he will probably remember for a long time.
Jacobs, wrestling at 106 pounds, posted a 5-0 record on Saturday and won the individual championship in his weight class at the Gull Lake Blue Devil Classic tournament.
Jacobs got off to an easy start, drawing byes in the first two rounds, but then he went to work and put on an impressive show.
First he pinned Plainwell’s Sebastian Newburg in just 34 seconds in the quarterfinal round. Then he pinned Harper Creek’s Grayson Damron in 3:55 in the semifinals.
That took Jacobs to the championship match, where he pinned Gull Lake’s Brendan Koyle in just 55 seconds.

Jacobs and his teammates had a great day all around, combining their efforts to propel the Trojans to a third-place finish in the team standings, better than 14 other teams. Fruitport only finished behind first-place Harper Creek and second-place Gull Lake.
Fruitport’s Chase Rosema took second place at 215 pounds with a 4-1 record and three pins. Zach Aardema finished second in the 132-pound division, posting a 4-1 record with two pins. Colton Smith took second in the 190-pound division with a 4-1 record and two pins.
Cooper Lengkeek was third at 157 pounds with a 4-1 record and three pins. He lost in the semifinals and his fourth win came in the third-place match.
Rylan Thorsen took third place at 113 pounds with a 4-1 record and four pins. His final victory was also in the third-place match.
Murphy Lengkeek took fifth place at 138 pounds, Alex Aardema was fifth at 150 and Adam Marjonen was ninth at 285 pounds.
The Trojans managed to finish very high in the team standings, despite the fact that they showed up shorthanded with several top wrestlers missing.
“It was a great weekend!” said Fruitport head coach Chad Johnson. “The boys were challenged at a tough tournament and truly rose to the occasion. We’re starting to find our groove. Finishing third as a team, especially with only 9 of 14 wrestlers able to compete due to illnesses, really shows how well we wrestled. We enter conference play this week and are looking forward to it!”
