FRUITPORT – The Fruitport soccer team truly earned its second straight O-K Silver conference championship.

Technically the Trojans clinched the title on Thursday, when they beat Godwin Heights in the conference tournament semifinal round. Fruitport had already placed first in the regular season, and at least a second place finish in the tournament, which was secured by winning in the semis, guaranteed the trophy for the Trojans.

But it wouldn’t have been quite the same if they hadn’t completed their run of perfection.

The Trojans did that on Thursday with a 2-0 home victory over Calvin Christian in the conference tournament championship game at Ken Erny Field. Fruitport finished off the conference season with a perfect 10-0 record, one year after finishing the 2024 season with a 10-0 record.

Fruitport is now two-for-two in its conference championship efforts, because it’s only been in the Silver for two years. This year’s work was extra special, because the Trojans only gave up a total of two goals in the 10 conference games.

“I’m really proud of the boys,” said Fruitport Coach Dan Hazekamp. “It took a collective effort from all 25 guys tonight. To be able to go 10-0 in the O-K Silver and concede (only) two goals in conference play is a great achievement.

“Now we turn our sights to the state tournament, where we have an incredibly tough district. Tonight was a good game to build off from going forward.”

The Trojans had to work hard to control the ball and get scoring chances against Calvin Christian, which is ranked No. 1 in the state in Division 4.

Fruitport finally broke through late in the first half when Jorge Burgos-Yack found the goal, with an assist from Caleb Chandler.

“Calvin is a really good team, they are well coached,” Coach Hazekamp said. “We had a hard time  getting the ball back, but once we made some tactical adjustments, we linked some things together.  It’s not always the prettiest but we have some explosive guys that can make things happen.”

The final goal came late in the second half when Fruitport’s Hudson Hazekamp attempted to place a long free kick into the mob of players in front of the Calvin Christian goal, but it went in the goal instead.

A leaping Davis Johnson distracted the Calvin Christian goaltender just enough to help Hazekamp’s shot find its way through.

“I knew our guys were hungry for the ball, so I sent a ball into the mixer,” Hudson Hazekamp said.  “I was just trying to put the ball up for my team, and luckily for me it went in.”

The shutout victory was the 11th straight for the Trojans, who may the stingiest team in the state in any division. The now have 15 total shutouts this season.

Goalie Mason Kettel stopped three shots  and the Trojans received strong defensive performances from midfielders Jayden Booker and Johnson and the team’s back line.

“The key is to stay connected, and always communicate,” Booker said about the tough defense. “I had a conversation with my teammates to ensure we are covering for each other.”

“These guys are built to play a gritty style,” Coach Hazekamp said. “We tend to run hard, and really get stronger as the games go on. I think tonight was another really good example of that.  When you play hard, and play well defensively, you can really squeeze the other team.”

The Trojans, now 15-3-3 on the season, will enter Division 2 district tournament play with a first-round bye. They will host the tournament and open play next Tuesday against the winner of the first round Coopersville-Northview game.storagemini
