The very young Fruitport boys tennis team is definitely making progress.

That was apparent on Thursday when the Trojans won their second duel match of the season, and they did it in resounding fashion, beating Fremont 7-1.

The Trojans had a near-sweep in singles play against the Packers.

Joey Fountain

Remy Parker beat Fremont’s Aiden Sculnik 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Nathan Medema beat Jackson Sculnik 7-5, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.’ Dominik Kooy beat William Folkema 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 singles.

Fruitport’s Tucker Gholson won his first set against Daniel Curiel 6-3, but lost the second 6-1 and the tiebreaker 10-7.

The Trojans were totally dominant in doubles play.

Evan Olson

Landon McMullin and Jackson Yandell beat Fremont 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, Kaleb Brege and Brian Meeuwenberg won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2, Jonathon Quigg and Julian Stowers won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3, and Joey Fountain and Evan Olson won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4.

“One hiccup was three singles, which lost in three sets,” said Fruitport head coach Brad Busscher. “However, all other flights carried the play and seemed to eventually settle into their matches and play with confidence.”

Julian Stowers

The Trojans lost to Western Michigan Christian on Wednesday, but still won a pair of doubles matches.

Quigg and Stowers beat WMC 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 while Olson and Carson Vallie won 7-6, 6-1 at No. 4.

“We have moments when we look like experienced tennis players and compete at a higher level,” Busscher said. “Unfortunately, consistency and experience are the two items needed the most in a tennis match. With so many that have not played a varsity tennis match before this season, there was definitely going to be some road bumps throughout the season as we improved our play.

Remy Parker

“We had flights on Wednesday that demonstrated improved play at moments during the match. On Thursday we saw many flights exhibit more of that consistent play.”

The Trojans completed their week by competing in the GMAA City Tournament on Saturday.

Quigg and Stowers produced Fruitport’s only win of the day, 7-6, 6-0 over Reeths-Puffer at No. 3 doubles.
