Fruitport volleyball team takes a detour from its winning ways, falls in four sets to Spring Lake

The Fruitport volleyball team loves to beat rival Spring Lake, and the Trojans got a good start on that on Thursday, cruising to a first set win over the Lakers.

But then the wheels came off for the Trojans, who lost the last three sets, two by very close scores, and experienced their fifth defeat of the season.

The set scores were 25-20, 25-27,15-25, 23-25.

Fruitport won its first match of the day, cruising past Ravenna 25-17, 26-9, 25-17. The Trojans are now 12-5-1 on the season.

“Today was a tough learning experience for us,” said Fruitport head coach Nicole Bayle. “We showed our youth on the court when the game got close. Kudos to the Spring Lakes team, they stepped up in the big moment, and we have got to learn to do that.

“We had lots of great moments as a team and we just need to continue to string those together. I believe in these girls and I know we have big things coming ahead of us.”

Izzy Hanson-Wilbur and Ellie Stroup led the offense with 22 and 21 kills, respectively.
