The Fruitport tennis team may be full of beginners, particularly at the varsity level, but the Trojans are showing definite signs of progress.

That was evident on Thursday, when the Trojans won matches in three flights against Comstock Park in an O-K Silver conference duel.

Nathan Medema

Fruitport lost the team score 5-3, with No. 1 singles player Remy Parker out with illness, but still had a lot to feel good about.

Nathan Medema (No. 2 singles) won his first match of the season, beating Comstock Park’s Cole Brozozowski in three tough sets.

Medema lost the first set 4-6, then fought back to win the next two, 6-3, 6-1.

“Nathan finally played a complete match and was rewarded for patience and steady play with his first win of the season,” said Fruitport Coach Brad Busscher. “Especially after losing the first set, he maintained control and made adjustments to convincingly win the last two sets.”

Fruitport’s other two victories came in doubles.

Jonathon Quigg and Julian Stowers (No. 3 doubles) beat their opponents 6-3, 6-2.

Joey Fountain

Joey Fountain and Evan Olson (No. 4 doubles) won their match 6-4, 6-2.

“We feel really good about our three and four doubles, who played well and finished they’re matches well,” Busscher said.

“Our team is getting stronger and we are looking for a complete victory with all eight flights contributing successfully.”storage
