Jorge Burgos-Yack connected on a pair of goals, including the game winner on a penalty kick, to give the Fruitport soccer team an exciting 4-3 victory over state-ranked Allendale on Saturday in a non-conference showdown.

The win was the fifth in a row for Fruitport, which improved to 5-3-2 on the season.

The Trojans knew they were in for a battle against Allendale, which came into the game undefeated and ranked No. 5 in the state in Division 2.

Jorge Burgos-Yack

Burgos-Yack opened the scoring with a goal in the first half, assisted by Ryder Merkins. Allendale tied the score on a penalty kick just 30 seconds later.

Hudson Hazekamp put the Trojans up 2-1 later on in the first half, scoring on a long free kick from about 40 yards out. The Falcons again countered quickly with a goal two minutes later.

Fruitport’s Quincy McDaniels scored with 2:50 left in the first half, with an assist from Carter Gregor, and the Trojans led 3-2 at halftime.

Allendale scored again on a penalty kick in the second half, before Burgos-Yack answered with a PK goal of his own to give the Trojans their final margin of victory.

Hudson Hazekamp

Fruitport Coach Dan Hazekamp credited Ryder Chan, Davis Johnson, Hudson Hazekamp, Jayden Booker and Gavin Wilson for strong play.

“It was a wild game with lots of ups and downs and momentum shifts,” the coach said. “Being able to knock off a top five team in the state that was previously undefeated is a great step as we continue to build for the end of the season.

“The effort and energy was really good, both on the field and on the bench. Really proud of the guys for their grit and toughness for 80 minutes.”

The Trojans will host Comstock Park in Tuesday in a conference matchup.storagemini
