The Fruitport boys tennis team has a full lineup this season, something the Trojans have not enjoyed in quite a few years.
The flip side is that a lot of the new players lack varsity experience, and will be learning on the job as the season progresses.

That was apparent on Friday when the Trojans won only two matches at the season-opening Holland Invitational. They finished in fourth place out of four teams in the standings with two points. Holland won the event with 14 points, followed by Coopersville (19) and Niles (9).
There were definite pockets of promise for the Trojans, however.
Fruitport’s Dominik Kooy (No. 4 singles) captured the Trojans’ only true victory of the day. He beat Niles’ Ryker Leaverton in three sets, winning the tiebreaker 10-4.

The Trojans other victory came at No. 1 singles, where Remy Parker won a match by forfeit
Fruitport’s Nathan Medema, playing No. 2 singles, posted an 0-3 record, but put up quite a fight and showed real promise. He won 15 of 37 games in his three matches.

Fruitport’s Tucker Gholson was also very competitive at No. 3 singles, going 0-3 but winning 13 of the 38 games.
“There was quite a bit of learning and growth from our group,” said Fruitport Coach Brad Busscher. “Seven of our 10 guys who played in the tournament were playing their first varsity match.”
The Trojans will play at NorthPointe Christian on Wednesday.
