Fruitport volleyball launches into new season with three wins at Coopersville

The Fruitport volleyball team had a good day on Friday at the season-opening Coopersville Invitational, posting a 3-2-1 record against some pretty good opponents.

The Trojans’ most exciting match was against rival Spring Lake. They lost the first set 25-19, then rallied to win the next two and the match, 25-20, 25-11.

Fruitport also defeated Oakridge 25-14, 26-25 and Reeths-Puffer 27-25, 25-20. The Trojans split two sets with Coopersville, losing the first 25-19 but winning the second 25-15.

The Trojans lost to Otsego 25-21, 25-15 and East Grand Rapids 25-16, 25-12.

Leading the way on offense were three familiar names from last season – Izzy Hanson-Wilbur, who had 30 kills, followed by Ellie Stroup (23) and Emma Danicek (19).

Fecher served up nine aces while Stroup had seven.

Fecher had 46 assists and Alexa Sweet added 32.

Defensively, Porter Johnson had 56 digs, Stroup added 37, Fecher totaled 36 and Hanson-Wilbur had 32.

“I was pleased with our effort today!” said Fruitport Coach Nicole Bayle. “We had some great points of growth and gained some confidence in each other as teammates. We certainly have things to work out, but I felt very positive that this is our starting point.”mini [7] [8] [9] [10] [11]
