Fruitport tennis team captures its first three doubles victories of the season at its own tournament

Ordinarily three victories in a day full of tennis matches is not a great total for any team.

But for the very young and inexperienced Fruitport boys tennis team, it was real progress and a significant step forward.

The Trojans won their first three doubles matches of the season on Friday, highlighting their day at their own Fruitport Invitational.

Fruitport’s No. 2 doubles team of Kaleb Brege and Brian Meeuwenberg defeated Reeths-Puffer’s Henrik Ketner and Zaden Ziotnicki, 6-2, 6-4.

The No. 3 team of Jonathan Quigg and Julian Stowers beat R-P’s Cameron Mock and Brennan Dietz, 6-2, 6-1.

The No. 4 team of Carson Vallie and Elijah Wierenga beat Western Michigan Christian’s Indiana Jones and Daniel Grill, 6-2, 6-2.

In two prior events this season, the Fruitport team had only captured one victory, and that was in a singles match.

The Trojans’ singles players lost all of their matches on Friday, but several were very competitive and showed real progress.

Remy Parker, playing in the very challenging No. 1 singles spot, lost his third match 7-6, 6-3.

Tucker Gholson lost a 7-6, 6-3 match at No. 3 singles.

Dominik Kooy, at No. 4 singles, lost his first match 6-4, 7-5. Kooy officially went 2-1 on the day, winning his second and third matches by forfeit.

Fruitport Coach Brad Busscher is not satisfied with a few victories, however. He sees more potential in his team, and knows all the players can improve over the course of the season.

Guys show instances of good tennis, but we are searching for consistency from all the flights,” he said.

The Trojans will compete at Sparta High School on Wednesday.mini [9] [10] [11] [12]
