WYOMING – The day will come when the Fruitport boys soccer team will lose an O-K Silver conference game.

The Trojans just don’t seem to be in any hurry to let that happen.

Since joining the O-K Silver last year, in fact, Fruitport has never lost. The Trojans posted a perfect 10-0 conference mark last season and won the championship, then opened their defense of that title on Thursday with an impressive 4-2 road victory over Godwin Heights.

The victory was the Trojans’ third in a row and improved their overall record to 3-3-2. They are 1-0 in the O-K Silver standings and will play another conference game at home next Thursday against Hopkins.

Fruitport controlled the game, building a 4–0 lead, before Godwin Heights popped in two late goals to make the score more respectable.

I’m in a good mood,” said Fruitport head coach Dan Hazekamp, whose team has rebounded very nicely after starting the season 0-3-2. “Obviously, we could have closed a little bit stronger there, but if you’d have told me we would come into Godwin and win by two goals against a really good team, I’d take it.”

The first two goals came during the first half, starting about 25 minutes into the game, when Fruitport’s Davis Johnson found the net after nailing a shot from the corner.

Only a few minutes later, teammate Hudson Hazekamp hit the mark to make the score 2-0.

The Trojans added two more goals in the second half, from Carter Gregor and Ryder Merkins, and had a four-goal edge.

The Wolverines wrecked the shutout by getting two goals in the last five minutes, both from Marco Aguilar-Lopez.

Despite those late goals, Coach Hazekamp was proud of his defense for containing the potent Godwin Heights attack for most of the game.

We were moving some things around, trying some different things,” he said. “You know, they got some good players, and when they find a window, they can capitalize on some of those things. They caught us in a couple of spots.”

I think something we learned tonight is that we’re capable of going on the road against good teams. We’ve got a good, deep team that can compete with another really solid team, and we’ve still got a lot of room to improve.”
