LAST SEASON: The Trojans’ 1-10 dual match record last year was actually more hopeful than it seemed on the surface. The team started out the season with some real handicaps, particularly with a roster of only eight players, when it takes 12 to fill out a full varsity lineup. But Fruitport added a few more players over the course of the season, then broke through in late September with a 5-1 victory over Hopkins, its first dual match victory since 2019. The Trojans were competitive in numerous other matches and did well in regionals, finishing eighth out of 11 teams and bypassing several opponents they lost to in the regular season.

KEY RETURNERS: The Trojans return four players from last year’s team, which will give the squad an important foundation of leadership and confidence. Perhaps the top returner is junior Remy Parker, who won six matches at No. 2 singles last season and could well be the No. 1 singles player this fall. The other experienced players are juniors Jackson Yandell, Dominik Kooy and senior Kaleb Brege. All three played doubles last year, but could be contenders to fill singles spots in the lineup.

PROMISING NEWCOMERS: There are a lot of them, and that’s very good news. The Trojans will have a roster of 13 players – the most in years – and should be able to field a full lineup in most matches. New to the roster this year are senior Julian Stowers, juniors Carson Vallie, Jonathon Quigg and Landon McMullin, sophomore Carson Spinner and freshmen Elijah Wierenga, Tucker Gholson, Brian Meeuwenberg, Nathan Medema, Kaleb Grant and Joey Fountain. Many of the new guys will be thrown right into the fire, playing key roles in the lineup. The good part is that they will gain valuable experience, and the future could be bright.mini

FIRST MATCH: The Trojans will open the season on Friday against several opponents in Holland. They will open at home a week later against North Muskegon.

COACH QUOTE: “We start the 2025 fall season with a full team for the first time in a long time. The exciting part is building a complete team that has a strong competitive spirit and enjoys their time on the court together. I believe one of our best traits as a team will be the growth mindset that the boys will possess as we progress through the season. The coaches here at Fruitport are anxious to get started with a great group of young men who are eager to demonstrate Fruitport tennis to our competition.” – Brad Busscherstorage
