The Fruitport boys soccer team posted its second victory of the season on Thursday night, breaking through in the second half to beat Cedar Springs 2-0 in a non-conference matchup at home.
The victory was the second in a row for the Trojans, who started the season 0-3-2 after a series of tough games at a weekend tournament up north.
[1]The game was scoreless at halftime, then the Trojans got on the scoreboard when Carter Gregor found the back of the net, with an assist from Jorge Burgos-Yack.
Burgos Yack added the final goal late in the game on a penalty kick.
Fruitport Coach Dan Hazekamp credited the midfield play of Davis Johnson and the backline defensive play of Nathaniel Cribley-Cotto, Hudson Hazekamp, Ryder Chan and Ryder Doherty for keeping Cedar Springs from mounting much of an attack.
[3]Fruitport goalie Mason Kettel stopped all three shots he faced to record the shutout.
“This was a gutsy win against a really solid Cedar Springs team,” Coach Hazekamp said. “I was really impressed by our composure throughout the game. This is a good building block going forward as we play a really tough non-conference schedule throughout the season. We are hoping to continue to build as we go forward.”
The Trojans, now 2-3-2, will return to action next Thursday when they open O-K Silver conference play at Godwin Heights.
