With the collapse of the traditional newspaper industry, high school sports have not been in the spotlight nearly as much as they used to be.
Fewer reporters are at the games, and schools with great teams and athletes often fly under the radar.
But that has not been the case for Fruitport High School, which had an outstanding 2024-25 varsity athletic season, with eight teams winning conference championships.

MuskegonSports.com, working closely with the Fruitport athletic department, was on top of all the action, providing blanket coverage of the overwhelming success of all the Fruitport teams, from the fall through the winter and spring seasons.
That coverage was made possible by our proud Fruitport sponsors – Mario Flores/VanDyk Mortgage, Eddie Alexander/EAG Real Estate, Source One Digital, The Storage Group, Johnson Auto Sales, Mini Excavating, TH Brands and Strategic CPA Accounting.
Those businesses lined up before the start of the season to support our effort to report everything Fruitport, and because of that, Trojans fans stayed up to date on all the victories that led to all the trophies.

There are different kinds of fans, of course. Some try to get to as many games as possible, and rely on media reports to fill in the gaps. Others prefer to just check the news a few times a week, to see how the local teams are doing.
MuskegonSports.com and its sponsors provided that service to thousands of Fruitport fans, for the third season in a row.
“We are super grateful for all of the sponsors who allowed us to have great media coverage,” said Fruitport Athletic Director Jonny Morehouse. “Especially in a year like we had, it was great to have all of the coverage. Thank you to the sponsors and thank you to MuskegonSports.com.”

Last fall, the Fruitport boys soccer team, volleyball team and girls cross country team won O-K Silver conference championships. In the winter, the boys basketball team, wrestling team and competitive cheer team won the conference. In the spring, the Trojan softball team and girls soccer team brought home O-K Silver trophies.
The boys basketball conference title was the first in school history.
In postseason play, four Fruitport teams (boys soccer, volleyball, wrestling and baseball) won district tournament championships while two – volleyball and baseball – captured regional titles.

The Trojans had a whopping 98 athletes earn O-K Silver All-Conference recognition, and 14 earn All-State recognition.
Fruitport also had eight teams qualify for Academic All-State honors.
One athlete – senior Braxton Ward – became an Academic All-American.

Overall Fruitport teams and athletes set 18 new school records in 2024-25.
“They were things like lowest score in girls golf, best record for the boys soccer and boys basketball teams, most three-pointers for the girls basketball team, most home runs for the softball team, best team ERA and most RBIs for the baseball team,” Morehouse said. “It was all across the board.”
Morehouse is not absolutely certain if 2024-25 was the most successful sports season in school history, because old records are spotty. But he knows it had to be one of the best, and he knows the people of Fruitport noticed and appreciated all of the success.

“It was definitely one of the best years in Fruitport athletic history,” he said. “There was tremendous community support for our teams. There were a lot of smiles and a lot of Trojan pride.”
All the winning provided a huge relief from previous seasons, when Fruitport struggled in many sports while competing in the very tough O-K Blue conference, which includes a lot of schools with many state-quality teams.
While the O-K Blue years were tough, they also helped prepare the Trojans to succeed when they were able to join a more competitive conference.

Simply put, you get better when you play the best teams over and over, even if it hurts.
“When you are playing a lot of state-ranked teams, day-in and day-out, it can wear on you,” Morehouse said. “But iron sharpens iron. The Blue probably got us to where we’re at now because of that tough competition.”
The 2025-26 season is right around the corner, and MuskegonSports.com is looking for a few new partners to add to our Fruitport sponsor list. Business owners who want to get in on the fun, and help keep the spotlight on Trojan Nation, are encouraged to send an email to [email protected].
