HUDSONVILLE – Saturday was a win one, lose one day for the Fruitport softball team.
That’s not such a bad thing in the regular season, but you can only lose once in the state tournament.
That means the Trojans’ outstanding season, which included a share of the O-K Silver conference championship, came to an end Saturday when they lost 10-0 to state-ranked Hudsonville Unity Christian in a Division 2 district tournament finals.
Fruitport ended the season with a 22-9 record.
“lt’s huge,” Fruitport Coach Bob Dorman said about the successful season. “It really goes back to the offseason, with the girls putting in the work in the weight room. They saw it pay off, and hopefully it will continue on Monday for next season.”
The Trojans’ day started with a 10-8 victory over Coopersville in the district semifinal round.
Fruitport fell behind 1-0 before tying the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first.
The Trojans scored two runs in the second before Coopersville responded with a run in the top of the third. Fruitport scored two more in the third to take a 5-2 lead.
The Broncos scored three runs in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 5-5.
Two runs in the fifth inning and three in the sixth gave Fruitport a 10-5 lead headed into the final inning.
Coopersville scored three runs in the top of the seventh, but it wasn’t enough.
Kendall Lee had one hit and three RBIs for Fruitport, Madyson Prout had two hits and two RBIs and Khloe Courtade finished with one hit and two RBIs.
Things got tough in the finals, however, with the Trojans facing Unity Chrisitian, which came into the game with 25 wins.
Unity Christian came out strong, scoring six runs in the home half of the first inning, then adding two apiece in the second and third to invoke the 10-run rule after the fifth.
The Trojans didn’t roll over and die, however, posting hits in every inning.
Senior Brooklyn Russell paced the Trojan offense with three hits while Lee had two.
“We didn’t go own 1-2-3,” Coach Dorman said. “That really tells us a lot about how hard the girls fought.”
The game marked the end of varsity softball for Russell and Brylee DeWitt, the Trojans’ two seniors.
“Whatever they do in life, they’re going to be successful,” Dorman said about the departing players.
As for the future, the loss of only two seniors means the Trojans will bring back a lot of key players next year, and will have a good chance to continue their success.
“We just talked about that,” Dorman said. “We’re young. We’re only losing two seniors. So I challenged them a little. I see the talent we’ve developed and I’m encouraging that. We don’t just want conference titles. We want this one and more in the future.”
