Fruitport’s Josalynn Nowicki added another feather to her cap on Thursday by advancing to the finals of the Division 2 regional tournament at Holland and qualifying as an individual for the state finals.

Nowicki competed in the elite No. 1 singles flight and posted a 2-1 record.

She started her day be defeating Whitehall’s Akeelah Martin 6-3, 6-0, then beat Ludington’s Jennah Skiba 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals.

Nowicki fell to Holland Christian’s Gabi Rooks in the finals, 6-1, 6-1.

Nowicki, who won a GMAA tournament title and the O-K Silver Conference title this year, will now play in the Division 2 state finals in Ann Arbor in two weeks.

Overall Fruitport had a good day at regionals, scoring five team points and finishing tied for fourth place with Whitehall, Coopersville and Ludington. Holland Christian took first place with 24 points.

Fruitport’s Gracie Ferrell also posted a 2-1 record and reached the finals at No. 4 singles.

She worked extra hard to gain her victories, beating Whitehall’s Riley Shafer 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 and Spring Lake’s Eve Feasby 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Ferrell lost to Holland Christian’s Iyla Holmes in the finals, 6-0, 6-0. The runner-up finish gave Ferrell the first varsity medal of her career.

The Trojans’ other success came in No. 2 doubles, where the sister act of Abby Poort and Bailey Poort defeated Coopersville 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 in the first round, before falling to Spring Lake in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-3.

Fruitport Coach Brad Busscher said the Trojans lost a few three-set matches that could have possibly given them a chance to earn a spot in the state finals as a team.

The Trojans still had a very successful season, however, finishing with a 6-3 record in dual matches.

“At regionals we played intense, inspired tennis, but came up short in the end,” he said. “But it does not take away from our very successful season.”storageminith brandseddie
