Fruitport girls soccer team sneaks past NorthPointe Christian 2-1, extends winning streak to seven straight games

Porter Johnson took a crossing pass from teammate McKenna Joslyn and scored with about 14 minutes left in the game, giving the soaring Fruitport girls soccer team an exciting 2-1 victory over NorthPointe Christian in an O-K Silver conference showdown on Wednesday.

The Trojans won their seventh straight game and improved to 8-3 overall and 5-0 in conference play. NorthPointe Christian dropped to 4-2 in the conference.

The team’s winning streak is particularly significant, considering the Trojans started the season with a 1-3 record.

Johnson scored Fruitport’s first goal with 3:13 left in the first half – with an assist from Joslyn – giving the Trojans a 1-0 lead.

NorthPointe tied the game with a long shot that deflected off a Fruitport defender and went into the net with about 16 minutes left in the game.

Johnson’s second goal settled the issue about two minutes later.

Fruitport goalkeeper Ava Powell stopped eight shots, and the defensive back line of Maycee Hall, Gracelyn Olson, Izzy Hanson-Wilbur and Kenzie Pate also played well again, limiting the visitors’ scoring chances.

“Our team is continuing to grow and improve every day. This marks our seventh victory in a row, which is a testament to this team’s resilience and growth-set mentality.”
