The Fruitport girls soccer team has been using great defense and goaltending, and just enough offense, to keep its winning streak going.

The Trojans downed Calvin Christian 2-1 at home on Friday, marking their eighth straight victory. They are now 9-3 overall and 6-0 in the O-K Silver conference standings.

The victory was the second straight tight 2-1 win for Fruitport. The Trojans also won recent games over Whitehall 2-1, Hopkins 3-2 and Montague 2-0.

Fruitport broke a scoreless tie midway into the second half, on a corner kick by Myla Parker that was knocked in the net by Porter Johnson.

Peyhton Beardsley, who scored what turned out to be the winning goal.

The Trojans made it 2-0 just a few minutes later when Peyhton Beardsley scored with an assist from McKenna Joslyn.

Calvin Christian scored with about 15 minutes left in the game, making the score 2-1, but Fruitport held on for the win.

The Trojans’ defensive back line of Kenzie Pate, Izzy Hanson-Wilbur, Gracelynn Olson and Maycee Hall, along with goalie Ava Powell, were credited for keeping Calvin Christian from doing any more damage.

“We came out slow on the night, but were able to battle through the adversity and find our stride,” said Fruitport head coach Kyle Hall. “Despite the late (Calvin Christian) goal off a corner kick, the back line played well and held Calvin Christian to three shots, which were all from 22-plus yards out from the goal.”

Fruitport will return to action next Wednesday at home against Fremont.minith brandseddiestorage
