The Fruitport baseball team fell just short of reaching one big goal, but there are several opportunities left for the Trojans to bring home trophies.
Fruitport went into Thursday’s home doubleheader against Hopkins with the O-K Silver conference championship on the line.
A sweep would have given the Trojans the outright title. A split would have forced a third game on Friday to determine the champion.
But Fruitport lost two painfully close games and ended up taking second place in the conference.
The Trojans, now 24-3 on the season, will compete in the Old Fashioned Days tournament on Saturday in Fruitport, then will play their final regular season game on Tuesday at Reeths-Puffer.

Fruitport will open Division 2 districts on Saturday, May 31 against Oakridge at Whitehall High School. A victory would put them in the district championship game later that day.
The Trojans lost the first game against Hopkins 2-0, wasting a brilliant pitching performance by Ryan Bosch, who tossed all seven innings, allowing just one earned run on three hits while striking out 18.
The loss ended Fruitport’s 13-game winning streak.
In Game 2, Fruitport lost an extra-inning heartbreaker, 6-5 in nine innings.
The Trojans fell behind early, then rallied with a four-run fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run homer by Ryan Bosch.
Avery Lambers and Hudson Hazekamp each contributed two hits for Fruitport in the game.
Trevor Rusnak took the mound and stuck out seven in 6 2/3 innings.
