The Fruitport baseball team bounced back from last week’s sudden losing streak, and had a successful warmup for districts, by beating Reeths-Puffer 5-3 on Tuesday in an exciting extra inning game at R-P’s Pete Sodini Field.

Fruitport’s Tommy Anderson opened the scoring in the second inning with a two-run homer. R-P made it 2-1 in the bottom of the inning on a well-executed squeeze play.

The Trojans took a 3-1 lead when a run scored on a fielder’s choice play in the third inning.

Reeths-Puffer’s Jack Yonkman tied the game up with a two-run single in the bottom half of the inning.

Jax Flynn, who doubled and scored the winning run.

The game remained tied until the top of the eighth, when Fruitport’s Jax Flynn had a leadoff double and scored on an RBI single by Trevor Rusnak. Hudson Hazekamp drove Rusnak home, giving the Trojans their final margin of victory.

Dexter Lillmars was the winning pitcher for Fruitport, throwing two scoreless innings of relief.

Anderson finished with three hits and two RBIs while Hazenkamp had two hits and one RBI.

The Trojans, now 25-5, broke an unwelcome four-game losing streak that started with a doubleheader loss to Hopkins last Thursday, then extended with a pair of losses to Western Michigan Christian and Montague over the weekend.

Fruitport now dives into the Division 2 district tournament at Whitehall High School on Saturday. The Trojans will play Oakridge at 10 a.m. and a victory would put them in the championship game at 2 p.m.th brandsministorageeddie
