Fruitport’s sister combo of Abby Poort and Bailey Poort had a day to remember on Saturday.
The Poorts posted a perfect 3-0 record in the No. 2 doubles flight to lead the Fruitport girls tennis team at its own invitational tournament.
They won all three matches by straight sets, but had to battle a bit.
The Poorts defeated Ludington’s Khloe Wachowski and Kennedy Feyers 6-4, 6-0; Spring Lake’s Haley Smith and Emily Schaner 7-6, 6-4; and Whitehall’s Addie Broton and Avarie Bentz 6-3, 7-5.
The Trojans had a so-so day as a team, finishing in fourth place out of four teams in the final standings.
[1]Fruitport totaled seven points. Spring Lake won the event with 19 points while Ludington and Whitehall each had 11.
The Trojans’ Josalynn Nowicki had a good day at No. 1 singles, posting a 2-1 record. She beat Whitehall’s Akeelah Martin 6-0, 6-2 and Spring Lake’s Sloan Horton 6-0, 6-4.
Tara Sweet (No. 3 singles) won one match, beating Ludington’s Amaya Sytek 6-0, 6-0.
Fruitport’s No. 4 doubles team of Jordan Smith and Mylee Mineni rallied to win a tough match, beating Whitehall’s Ella Sumerix and Delaney Konecny 4-6, 6-3, 10-7.
“The Poorts have been a consistent second doubles team all year long,” said Fruitport Coach Brad Busscher. “It helps that they played the same position last year. Josalynn also had a good day and just missed out on it being a great day.
“Otherwise it was a day in which we learned a little about our games. Now we need to use those past matches to improve our game and take our play in a positive direction to make the team successful.”
