The Fruitport softball team rebounded well after a tough loss on Tuesday, sweeping a non-conference doubleheader from Fremont on Friday.
Fruitport, now 10-3 on the season, has won four of its last five games.
The first game was tied 7-7 in the bottom of the seventh and final inning when Kalli Tawney singled and knocked in the winning run.
The contest was back and forth for all seven innings. Fruitport’s Madyson Prout homered in the first inning, tying the score at 1-1. Kendall Prout doubled in the second inning, putting Fruitport up 2-1.
Fremont pulled ahead 3-2, then Fruitport’s Kya Tawney knocked in a run in the third inning to tie the game at 3-3. Madyson Prout had an RBI sacrifice fly in the fourth inning, giving the Trojans a temporary lead.

The Packers scored three runs in the fifth inning and took a 6-4 lead, but the Trojans answered in the fifth with a two-run homer by Tawney and a one-run single by Aryssa St. Amour and gained a 7-6 edge.
Fremont tied the score in the sixth before Tawney’s RBI in the bottom of the seventh ended the game.
Fruitport piled up 13 hits in the game. St. Amour finished with three hits and Tawney had three RBIs.
Khloe Courtade earned the win on the mound, allowing nine hits while striking out eight.
“Both teams seem really battled back as soon as they were down,” said Fruitport Coach Bob Dorman. “I really feel we held our composure. We had a couple errors that didn’t take us down. the teammates were there to pick each other up and we moved forward and we kept battling.”

The Trojans had a much easier time in Game 2, winning 11-0. Madyson Prout led the way with three hits – a homer in the first inning, and a double and single in a big third inning.
Fruitport took control with nine runs in the third inning.
Tawney had an RBI fielder’s choice, Kendall Lee had a two-run double, St. Amour had an RBI sacrifice line out, a run scored on an error, Brooklyn Russell hit a one-run double, Prout hit a two-run double, Brylee DeWitt had a one-run single and Tawney finished with a one-run single.
Russell pitched the win, scattering five hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
“All I can say about Game 2 is, holy smokes, in the third inning we just erupted,” Dorman said. “The girls started hitting and it was contagious. Every girl coming to the plate was getting great looks and great swings and great results.” [4]
