The Fruitport girls tennis team fell just short on Tuesday in a 5-3 loss to Calvin Christian in an O-K Silver conference match.
The Trojans did their best work in singles, picking up two victories.
Josalynn Nowicki (No. 1 singles) cruised past Calvin Christian’s Audrey Groenenboom 6-1, 6-1. Emma Fecher (No. 3 singles) downed Calvin Christian’s Ella Busscher in a tough match, 7-6, 1-6, 6-2.
Fruitport’s Gracie Ferrell gave it a good fight at No. 4 singles, winning her first set 6-4, losing the second 7-6 in a tiebreaker, then falling in the third.

The Trojans came up short in doubles, winning only one of the four matches.
That victory came from Abby Poort and Bailey Poort, who defeated the Calvin Christian team 6-3, 6-4.
The Trojans’ No. 1 doubles team of Rylee Rufener and Lena Saffell won their first set, but lost their last two in a competitive match.
“We came up short in a close match,” said Fruitport Coach Brad Busscher. “We had three matches go three sets and we won one of those matches. The match could have ended much differently.
“As we grow as a team and increase our skills, we feel these close matches will increasingly go in our favor. So as we work hard to prepare in practice we want to put our girls in a position to succeed throughout the season.”
