Fruitport has never been known as a local golf power, but that may be starting to change a bit.

The Trojan boys team went up against every other team in the county on Monday and did very well, finishing second at the Greater Muskegon Athletic Association Tournament at the Muskegon Country Club.

Fruitport finished with a team score of 339, which was two strikes ahead of third-place Reeths-Puffer and 24 behind champion Mona Shores.

It was the Fruitport golf program’s best finish ever at the GMAA event.

Chase Sullivan led the Trojans with an 83 score and finished tied for ninth in the individual standings. He won a medal for his efforts.

Tyler Carlson shot an 84 and finished in 11th place. He was followed by Cole Woodard (85, 12th place), Hunter Fritz (87, 16th) and Landon Lodholtz (907, 31st).

“We had four guys play solid golf today,” said Fruitport Coach Aaron Gregory. “Each one of them could have easily been four or five strokes better, and at the same time each one had some moments of adversity that they overcame to post solid scores. I am proud of our effort and the way guys played down the stretch to finish.

“This is the best finish in the GMAA in my time coaching at Fruitport, and per our athletic director it is our best finish in the GMAA in school history. Our four seniors continue to put in work, and I hope they get to have some more moments this year where that work is rewarded.”

The Trojans will return to action on Wednesday in an O-K Silver conference event.minith brandseddiestorage
