The Fruitport wrestling team has won its share of postseason trophies in recent years, but it had been a long time since the Trojans had won a conference championship.

That changed on Friday, when Fruitport easily outdistanced the rest of the field, won the O-K Silver conference tournament at Belding High School, and in the process clinched the overall conference championship.

Friday’s success marked a clean conference sweep for the Trojans, who posted a 5-0 record in the dual meet portion of the O-K Silver season, then dominated the competition at the tournament.

It was the first conference title for the Trojans since 2014.

Fruitport finished with 191.5 points, followed by Belding (168.5), Hopkins (148.5), Godwin Heights (95), Kelloggsville (50) and Comstock Park (44).

The Trojans won individual championships in five weight classes and finished second in six others. That means they had wrestlers in 11 of the 14 championship round matches, which illustrated just how well they did overall.

“We made it a priority to take the conference title at the beginning of the season,” said Fruitport head coach Chad Johnson. “We believed we had what it took to be in contention since day one. It took the entire team to do their jobs individually to set us up for the title.”

Winning individual weight class titles for Fruitport were Zach Aardema (120 pounds), Alex Aardema (132), Davis Johnson (138), Cooper Lengkeek (157) and Luke Westerlund (285).

Zach Aardema, now 22-6 on the season, beat Comstock Park’s John Bryant 8-2 in the championship round.

Alex Aardema, 24-12, downed Hopkins’ Cooper Anderson 6-2 in the finals.

Johnson, 29-7, defeated Belding’s Eli Kuitert by major decision in the finals, 16-3.

Lengkeek, 32-4, won by technical fall over Hopkins’ Zach Wierenga in the title round, 16-0.

Westerlund, 21-10, pinned Belding’s Xzavier Stricklan in 5:59 to clinch his championship.

Taking second place in their weight classes for Fruitport were Phillip Stone-Tyler (113), Jeremiah Stone-Tyler (106), Jacob Totten (126), Blair Zimmer (150), Chase Rosema (190) and Ethan Riggs (215).

Fruitport’s Kalan Teeter (165) finished fourth in his weight class.

The Trojans now move on to the postseason, beginning with a Division 2 team district tournament in their own gym on Wednesday.

Fruitport will wrestle Coopersville at 5:30 p.m. in one semifinal, while Spring Lake and Ludington will battle on the other mat at the same time.

The two winners will meet for the district title following the semifinals.

The Trojans will be gunning for their third consecutive district championship.

“I’m proud of the way this team continues to improve week by week,” Coach Johnson said. “They are unselfishly willing to do whatever it takes for the team. I’m looking forward to using this momentum we have created in the postseason. Wednesday will be a big night for us, and we’ll be ready.”
