Fruitport girls put up a good fight, but end up losing 49-43 to Godwin Heights in a tough league battle

After winning three of its last four games, the Fruitport girls basketball team headed to Godwin Heights on Tuesday with a bit of confidence.

But losses still happen, and the Trojans came up a bit short, falling 49-43 to the Wolverines in an O-K Silver conference game.

Fruitport dropped to 5-13 overall on the season and 5-6 in conference play. Godwin Heights improved to 4-9 and 2-7.

The Trojans trailed 13-12 after one quarter, and the game was tied 21-21 at halftime.

Fruitport was down four points, 31-27 after three quarters, and couldn’t quite close the gap in the fourth.

The Trojans pulled to within three points late, but were finally forced to foul, which allowed Godwin Heights to hang on.

“They had pretty relentless pressure (defense) all game against us, and we knew we had to handle it to beat them,” said Fruitport head coach Brian Packard. “When we did handled it we got layups, and when we didn’t we had turnovers. Our girls learned something about themselves tonight and it was a fun game to be a part of.”

The loss spoiled another great offensive performance by Fruitport’s Izzy Hanson-Wilbur, who posted a career-high point total for the second straight game. She finished with 27 points while also pulling down 12 rebounds.

Ava Powell also had a strong outing for Fruitport, putting up eight points despite playing with foul trouble.eddie [3] [4]mini [5]th brands [6] [7]storage [8] [9]
