FRUITPORT — Coming in on a two-game losing skid, and facing a team that beat them by double-digits earlier in the season, the Fruitport Trojans were facing an uphill battle in their Senior Night game on Friday.
But the Trojans were up to the task, winning a back-and-forth battle against Calvin Christian to send the seniors off with a 55-47 win in their final home game.
And the Trojans got a bonus after the game when they learned that Godwin Heights, the team that beat them on Tuesday, lost on Friday, so Fruitport is back in a tie for first place in the O-K Silver conference.
“We lost the last two games in a manner that still made me feel like we were on the right path,” Fruitport Coach Steve Erny said. “Sometimes when you lose a couple in a row, you’re left kind of wondering, going back to the drawing board, what do we have to change? I didn’t feel that way with this group.

“They’ve stayed the course, we had some good practices and we responded really well tonight to get off of that two-game losing streak.”
The game was tight throughout, with the score tied after one quarter and at halftime. The Squires led by one heading into the fourth, then the Trojans used a 21-12 edge in the final quarter to avenge a 64-48 loss to Calvin Christian in January.
A pair of key baskets in the fourth came from sophomore Brady Hanson, who hit a big three to put the Trojans up by five with 5:07 to play, then added a put-back layup on the Trojans’ next possession.
“He hit that three, which I think was probably the shot of the game,” Erny said. “Brady plays with a lot of confidence. When he hit that shot, I’d say that was probably the moment in the game where we took control. I don’t think they got any closer than they were at that point.”

Friday marked the final home game for five Fruitport seniors — Grade Anspach, Evan Butler, Ryan Bosch, Braden DeBoer and Kohen Moore.
“It really means the world to me,” Anspach said about winning his final home game. “We’ve been working for this program, we’ve turned it around recently, and it’s looking pretty good for the future. I’m just trying to do my part to set it up for the future.”
“I absolutely love our seniors and I’m really happy we can send them out with a win,” Erny said.
Fruitport moves to 15-5 overall and 9-3 in conference play. The Trojans moved back into a tie for first with Godwin Heights, which lost 55-51 to Kelloggsville.

Both teams have two conference games left.
“We just want to get a good roll going into districts,” Anspach said. “We’ve got to win these next two games, that’s all we can do.”
Friday’s game was tied 8-8 after the first quarter of play. Hudson Hazekamp led the Trojans with four points in the frame.
The Squires pulled out to a seven-point lead midway through the second quarter, but an 8-0 Fruitport run, featuring triples from Hazekamp and Dexter Lillmars, led to a 25-25 halftime tie.
Lillmars had eight points in the quarter while Bosch had four.

It was more of the same in the third quarter, as the teams traded baskets and the Squires took a 35-34 lead into the fourth.
Fruitport led 40-38 when Hanson hit his big triple to push the lead to five. The Trojans pushed the lead to 52-42 with a 14-4 run and got enough stops and free throws down the stretch to close out the win.
Lillmars led the Trojans with a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds. DayDay Williams was in double figures with 13 points, including seven in the fourth quarter, while navigating foul trouble.
Anspach had nine points, including 7-for-8 shooting at the free throw line. Hazekamp scored seven points and grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds. Hanson added six points, while Bosch had five points, six rebounds and three blocks.
