The Fruitport boys bowling team ended its strong season with a couple of very close calls at regionals last weekend.

The Trojans finished in third place in the 12-team Division 2 regional with a 3,355 score. Sparta was first with 3,422 while Cedar Springs was second with a 3,370.

Only the top two teams qualified to advance to the state finals, meaning the Trojans only missed the cut by 15 pins.

“We bowled our best day of the season,” said Fruitport Coach Tim McKeeby. “The boys left it all out there and bowled their absolute best. Although our goal was to bowl at the state finals, we are proud of ourselves for representing Fruitport bowling well.”

In the individual regional, Fruitport’s Keenan Camp just missed out on qualifying for the state finals by seven pins.

Camp finished ninth out of 68 bowlers with a 1,175 series, and only the top seven advanced to the finals. The seventh-place bowler had a series score of 1,182.

“Congratulations to Keenan Camp for finishing in ninth place in the region,” McKeeby said. “Our freshman, Dylan Winskas, finished as the second best freshman boy at regionals.”

In the girls team regional, Fruitport finished seventh out of eight teams with a 2,166 score. Sparta and Cedar Springs were first and second, respectively, and qualified for the state finals.

The Trojans bowled their best baker game of the season (152) and best regular game (653).

“We are very proud of our girls team,” McKeeby said. “We have a lot of potential.”

In the girls individual regional, Kyleigh O’Connell was the top Trojan, finishing 30th overall with a 773 series. She had the fourth highest score among the competing freshmen.

The Trojans also announced players from both the boys and girls teams who earned O-K Silver All-Conference honors for their play during the regular season.

Michael Hanson finished in fifth place in the final conference standings, Bradley Dekker was seventh and Camp was ninth. All earned first-team All-Conference status.

On the girls side, Kadie Juska finished in ninth place in the final conference standings and earned first-team All-Conference status. Harper Simila was honorable mention.eddieminith brandsstorage
