The Fruitport boys basketball team set a new school record for victories in a season on Tuesday with a hard-fought 63-57 win over Kelloggsville on the road in an important O-K Silver conference battle.

The win gave Fruitport a 16-5 overall record, which is one more win than the previous school record of 15, which was set two years ago.

The Trojans also set themselves up to clinch at least a share of the O-K Silver championship on Friday. Fruitport and Godwin Heights are tied for first place with 10-3 conference records and will both wrap up their regular season schedules that night.

Fruitport will travel to Belding while Godwin Heights will visit NorthPointe Christian.

The Trojans had to battle all night against Kelloggsville. The game was tied 13-13 after one quarter, and the Rockets led 30-29 at halftime and 44-43 after three quarters.

Fruitport freshman Dexter Lillmars, who scored 22 points, including 10 in the crucial fourth quarter.

Fruitport stole the win by outscoring the home team 20-13 in the final eight minutes.

A huge moment occurred in the final minute with the game tied, when senior Grade Anspach got a great pass to freshman Dexter Lillmars, who nailed an “and one” play with a bucket and free throw to put the Trojans up for good.

Lillmars led the Trojans with 10 big points in the fourth quarter.

“Tonight was tight throughout the game,” said Fruitport head coach Steve Erny. “A couple of big plays down the stretch won us this game. We hit free throws down the stretch and took care of the ball. Kelloggsville has been playing well as of late, and we had to gut this one out.”

Lillmars finished with 22 points, nine rebounds and three assists for Fruitport. DayDay Williams added 13 points, five assists and three steals; Hudson Hazekamp totaled 10 points and four rebounds; and Anspach had nine points and eight assists.storageeddieminith brands
