The Fruitport competitive cheer team won a conference championship last season in the O-K Blue, and now the Trojans look like a strong contender in their new conference, the O-K Silver.
They demonstrated that on Wednesday with an easy first-place finish at the first O-K Silver meet of the season.
The Trojans totaled 697.06 points, followed by NorthPointe Christian (657.09) and Belding (643.90).
The team had a 216 score in Round 1 (execution), 203 in Round 2 (overall skills) and 277 in Round 3 (stunts).
The first-place finish was a nice bounceback from the Trojans’ last match, when they encountered some difficulties and finished third at a meet in Cedar Springs.
They did it without two starters who normally compete in all three rounds, and relied on others to step in and get the job done.
“They truly came together as one to push through this week,” said Fruitport Coach Saqora Conklin. “Many people changed positions, learned new parts of rounds, and had to deal with so many last minute changes, but they all did it with hard work and knew it was best for the team. They are a very coachable group of young women!”
Conklin credited two girls who filled in during Round 3 and performed well – Ella Sparks and Evelyn Orr.
“Both of them learned the round within two days and helped take home a win,” the coach said. “I am so proud of them and their work ethic!”
