The Fruitport boys bowling team had a successful day at its own invitational tournament at Northway Lanes on Saturday, finishing in second place after upsetting the top-seeded team in the playoffs.

The Trojans finished in fourth place in the baker and regular game standings, which put them into the four-team playoff.

Fruitport upset Grand Haven, which finished first in the preliminary competition, 366-318 in the playoff semifinals.

The Trojans then advanced to the championship round, where they lost to Sparta 431-351.

Fruitport’s Michael Hanson finished seventh out of 135 bowlers in the individual standings with a 581 series, which included a 231 game.

Bradley Dekker was 21st with a 536 series, followed by Keenan Camp (35th, 501), Corbin Judd (38th, 486) and Josh Vanstelle (57th, 423).

“We bowled our very best today and fought hard to the very end,” said Fruitport Coach Tim McKeeby. “We are excited for our second place finish in this very tough tournament, especially since we were the hosts. Congrats to our boys team on a great performance. Way to make Fruitport proud.”

The Fruitport girls finished 17th in the team standings and did not qualify for the playoffs.’

Kadie Juska was the top Trojan, finishing 32nd in the individual standings with a 413 series.

Harper Simila was 58th with a 332 series, followed by Joe Pider (61st, 323), Madison Smith (68th, 307) and Kaityln Bourdon (79th, 247).

“We are determined to keep improving,” McKeeby said about the girls squad. “Once we are able to stay consistent, we should be contenders in dual matches and tournaments.”minith brands
