Fruitport wrestler Davis Johnson put on an impressive performance at Saturday’s Gull Lake Invitational.
Johnson, wrestling at 144 pounds, won four matches easily, posted a 4-1 record and finished in second place in his weight division.
Johnson beat Connor Bleything of Three Rivers 19-3, Barra Al-Gharrib of Kalamazoo Central 17-1, Matt Smith of Gull Lake by pin and Ben Lynes of Plainwell by pin.
He lost the championship match to Reeths-Puffer standout Ian Cook.
“DJ has found his stride,” said Fruitport Coach Chad Johnson. “He made a ton of unnoticed sacrifices this summer to set himself apart, and the results from that are speaking for themselves. His pace is unmatched.”

Johnson was one of 12 Fruitport wrestlers to finish in the top 10 of their weight classes in the very competitive tournament, which included a lot of strong teams.
Fruitport finished sixth out of 23 teams with 173.5 points. Plainwell took first place with 230.5.
Taking third place in their weight classes for Fruitport were Cooper Lengkeek (157 pounds), Carsen Crow (175), Chad Rosema (190) and Ethan Riggs (215).
Colton Smith took sixth place at 190 pounds and Ryder Chan did the same at 119 pounds.
Phillip Stone-Tyler (120) and Jayden Perry (285) took seventh place in their weight classes. Kalan Teeter (165) was eighth while Alex Aardema (132) and Luke Westerlund (215) both finished ninth.
“We put together a full team performance,” Coach Johnson said. “It was a huge tournament with a ton of high-caliber teams. I am going to continue to test this team. We’re preparing them for a deep postseason run.”
