Fruitport sophomore Bradley Dekker finishes in sixth place at OV Invitational, wins first varsity tournament medal

Sophomore Bradley Dekker is quickly developing into a very good varsity bowler.

Dekker has led the Fruitport boys bowling team in scoring several times this season, including Friday, when he finished in sixth place individually out of 103 bowlers at the Cardinal Invitational at Northway Lanes, hosted by Orchard View.

Dekker got better with each game, rolling scores of 139, 190 and 230 to finish with a 559 series.

He won an All-Tournament medal for the first time in his varsity career.

Dekker’s performance was the highlight of the day for the Trojans, who have been great so far this season, but finally had to settle for a so-so day at the OV event.

The Fruitport boys finished in ninth place out of 20 teams in the baker and regular games with a score of 2,608. They missed out on qualifying for the tournament playoffs by five pins, trailing eighth-place Kent City (2,613).

Michael Hanson rolled a 476 series for Fruitport and finished 28th in the individual standings. Corbin Judd was 39th with a 448, Zach Durakovic was 51st with a 426 and Keenan Camp was 58th with a 419.

Durakovic was one of four bowlers at the event to receive a special sportsmanship medal from the Michigan High School Interscholastic Bowling Coaches Association.

“It’s always tough to miss the cut by five pins, but we are determined to refocus and perform well at our invite on Jan. 4,” said Fruitport Coach Tim McKeeby. “We are proud of Zach Durakovic for being recognized with a sportsmanship award, and congrats to Bradley Dekker for finishing top seven.”

The Fruitport girls finished near the bottom of the team standings with an overall score of 1,800.

Kadie Juska was the top Trojan, rolling a 414 series and finishing in 19th place individually. Harper Simila was 44th with a 347 series, Mya Herrygers was 64th with a 268, Kyleigh O’Connell was 66th with a 264 and Maddie Smith was 82nd with a 136.

“Our girls team keeps seeing improvement,” McKeeby said. “Congrats to Harper Simila and Maddie Smith for setting new personal records and to Kadie Juska for being our top bowler.”
