The Fruitport girls competitive cheer squad seems to be picking up right where it left off last season, and that’s a very good thing.

Last year the Trojans had a great season, winning the O-K Blue conference championship, and this year they are off to another great start, taking first place in two of three meets and setting a new school single meet point record in the process.

The new record was set at last Saturday’s Mona Shores Invitational, where the Trojans took first place with an overall score of 733.9. That mark shattered the previous team record score of 721.

Fruitport recorded a 227.2 score in Round 1 (execution), 204.4 in Round 2 (overall skills) and a 302.3 in Round 3 (stunts).

Reeths-Puffer finished in second place and Muskegon was third.

“This team was incredible,” Fruitport Coach Saqora Conklin said about the performance at Mona Shores. “They knew they had some high pressure with some strong competition and they put in the work to make sure they hit!”

The championship was the second in a row for the Trojans, who also took first place at the Dec.18 Wyoming Lee Invitational.

Fruitport scored a 220.5 in Round 1, 194.2 in Round 2 and 283.1 in Round 3, for a total score of 697.8.

Allendale took second place and Lee finished third.

The Trojans opened the season on Dec. 13 at the Competitive Cheer Coaches Association of Michigan meet, where they finished third, but set new team records in Round 1, Round 2, and combined rounds 1 and 2.

“This team has brought some fire coming into this season,’ Coach Conklin said.

Fruitport will next compete at a meet at Cedar Springs High School on Jan. 4.eddieminith brands
