Fruitport cross country standout Vincent Pollock has had his share of first-place finishes, but Saturday was kind of special, because he officially became Muskegon County’s best.
Pollock, a senior, won the individual championship at the Greater Muskegon Athletic Association City Meet at Rycenga Park.
The competition for the top spot wasn’t that close.
Pollock finished with a time of 16:29.45, almost a full 10 seconds ahead of Mathias Morse of Western Michigan Christian, who placed second with a mark of 16:39.14.

Fruitport cross country coach Randy Johnson was impressed.
“Vincent ran a great race,” Johnson said. “Once he took over the lead he never looked back. He ran an impressive time and looked strong the entire way.”
Overall the Fruitport boys finished seventh out of the 10 teams with 155 points. Western Michigan Christian won the team title with 48 points.
Fruitport’s Landon Johnson finished 22nd with a time of 18:26. Dylan Winskas took 32nd (19:25), Josh VanStelle was 53rd (22:36) and Drew Powell was 56th (23:21).

VanStelle and Powell both ran personal best times.
“Everyone ran a solid race,” Johnson said about the boys team.
From a team perspective, the Fruitport girls had the better day, finishing fourth out of seven teams with 75 points. WMC also won the girls title with 40 points.
The Trojans were very competitive across the board, with three runners placing in the top 20.

Senior Valerie Pollock, Vincent’s twin, finished in sixth place and won a medal with a time of 20:33.
Her teammate Peyhton Bearsley was right behind her in seventh place, and also won a medal, with a time of 20:39.
Fruitport’s Treasure Fleese was 14th with a time of 22:01 and Zoe German was 19th with a time of 22:34.
Genevieve Franklin came in 33rd with a mark of 25:02 and Bailey Garner was just behind her in 34th place with a time of 25:06.
“Valerie ran a personal best time on this course, improving her time on the same course last week by one minute,” Coach Johnson said. “All the girls ran quality times.”
