BELDING – The Fruitport football team got a reminder on Friday night that there’s still a lot of work to be done before it can compete with opponents like Belding.

The Black Knights have made the state playoffs for four straight seasons, and seven of the last eight, and the Trojans saw how they did it in a 58-7 loss in O-K Silver conference play.

The painful defeat ended a two-game winning streak for the Trojans.

“They’re a heck of a football team,” Fruitport head coach Nate Smith said about Belding. “They’re big, physical and fast. Those are some of the things we have to get better at in the offseason. We have to get in the weight room to get stronger and bigger.”

Belding took control on the first possession of the night, driving 80 yards in 10 plays to take an 8-0 lead with 7:18 remaining in the first quarter.

After a Trojan punt, Belding then drove 53 yards in three plays to take a 16-0 lead, which was the score after one quarter.

The Black Knights outscored Fruitport 30-0 in the second quarter to take a 46-0 lead at halftime.

The Trojans finally broke through on the opening possession of the second half when quarterback Brady Hanson found DayDay Williams for a 59-yard touchdown pass. The extra point made the score 46-7 with 9:55 left in the third quarter.

Belding scored once in the third quarter to make the score 52-7 heading into the fourth.

The Black Knights added one more touchdown with 3:26 remaining in the game to close out the scoring.

Hanson completed 4 of 12 passes for 90 yards for Fruitport while Williams caught three passes for 82 yards.

“I thought Brady threw the ball really well tonight,” Smith said about his sophomore quarterback. “If there is anything I’m going to walk away with, it’s that he got some really good reps, and I’m really impressed with how he processes things.”

Fruitport is now 2-3 on the season and 1-1 in conference play.

The Trojans will try to get back on the winning track next week when they visit Godwin Heights in another O-K Silver contest.

“We just said on the field, we’re going to get on the bus, and this is done,” Smith said. “The reality is, it’s time to learn from and forget about it. It’s time to focus on Godwin for next week.”storageminith brands
