The Fruitport volleyball team had a lot of players blasting kills and putting points on the scoreboard on Saturday.
That led to a very good outing at the team’s own Fruitport Invitational, where the Trojans posted a nice 3-1 record with victories over North Muskegon, Coopersville and Montague before falling to Gull Lake in the gold bracket semifinals.
The Trojans were again led by senior Sadie Haase, who recently reached the 1,000-kill mark for her career, with 36 in Saturday’s tournament.
Several other Trojans had big kill days, as well, including Ellie Stroup and Izzy Hanson-Wilber with 13 apiece. Even Gracelynn Olson, the team’s outstanding setter who generally distributes the ball to others, got in the act with 10 kills.
Olson added 63 assists, Tara Sweet served up nine aces and Haase had eight.
Defensively, Hanson-Wilbur led the way with 31 digs. Olson had 24 and Emma Fecher had 22.
Those efforts helped Fruitport overcome a slow start and move through pool play with a 19-25, 25-21, 15-1 win over North Muskegon, followed by a grueling 27-25, 26-24 victory over Coopersville.
The Trojans went on to defeat Montague 25-21, 25-21 in bracket play before falling short against Gull Lake, 23-25, 19-25.
“The ladies played great volleyball today and continued to battle,” said Fruitport Coach Nicole Bayle, whose team is now 9-5 on the season and will visit rival Spring Lake on Tuesday in a non-conference match.
