A lot of coaches from top teams in all sports will tell you that they would rather not go into the postseason with a perfect record.
They really don’t want that target on their team’s back as they head into single-elimination situations, where one loss can end a championship effort or the season.
The Fruitport boys soccer team no longer has that pressure following Saturday’s 1-1 tie with rival Spring Lake in a non-conference matchup.
The Trojans, who entered the game with an unblemished record, are now 14-0-1 on the season. They also went in with a nine-game shutout streak that came to a halt.
Fruitport can now turn its attention to just winning, instead of trying to maintain perfection. The Trojans will host Hopkins on Tuesday in the opening round of the O-K Silver conference tournament.
Braxton Ward scored for Fruitport midway through the first half on Saturday, with an assist from Satchel Norwood. Spring Lake scored midway through the second half and the game ended in a draw.
Goalkeeper Logan Werschem recorded five saves for the Trojans.
