The Fruitport boys tennis team has been battling for a long time to post a victory, and it finally happened on Thursday when the Trojans downed Hopkins 5-1 in an O-K Silver conference match.
It was a lengthy wait for Fruitport, which had its fair share of flight wins by singles players and doubles teams over the years, but had gone without a team victory since the 2019 season.
[1]There was no certainty that the long-awaited win would come this season, simply because the Trojans started out the year shorthanded with only eight players. It takes 12 players fill out a complete lineup in varsity tennis.
The Trojans recently got a boost when several new players joined the roster at midseason and made the team more competitive.
Fruitport beat Hopkins in pretty convincing fashion.

Remy Parker (No. 2 singles) defeated Hastings’ Sam Webb 6-0, 6-0. Eli Puls (No. 3 singles) beat Owen Boge 6-0, 6-2.
The Trojans’ No. 1 doubles team of Shane Brosnan and Tommy Anderson beat Brendon Rabideau and Greg Rutkowski 6-0, 6-0.
The No. 2 doubles team of Jackson Yandell and Dominik Kooy beat Collin Kordelewski and Oliver Allen 6-2, 6-0.
Fruitport’s Bryce Baugh and Kaleb Brege won by forfeit at No. 3 doubles.
[4]Fruitport’s only loss came at No. 4 singles, but even that was very competitive. The Trojans’ Hayden Zimmer lost his first set to Anderson Forrel 6-4, battled back to win the second 6-3, then finally lost a tough tiebreaker 10-6.
There were double forfeits at No. 1 singles and No. 4 doubles, so neither team gained points from those flights.
