It may not have been a team victory, but it was certainly a sign of progress.
The Fruitport boys tennis team is very young, and most of the players struggled quite a bit last season and in the first few matches this year.
But the Trojans looked a lot better on Wednesday, winning two matches and putting up a fight in several more.
Fruitport lost to Kelloggsville on the road 6-2, but two of the home team’s points were forfeits because the Trojans do not have teams at No. 3 or No. 4 doubles.
The two Fruitport victories were pretty significant because it’s been a while since the Trojans won two flights on the same day.
One winner was Remy Parker, who defeated Kelloggsville’s Jontae Longmore 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 2 singles match.
Also taking home a victory was Fruitport’s Eli Puls, who coasted past Kelloggsville’s Cody Liang 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
Fruitport’s No. 1 singles player, Sebastian Sweet, managed to win five games before falling to Brandon Nguyen 6-3, 6-2.
“Our top three singles played well,” said Fruitport Coach Brad Busscher. “Both Remy and Eli dictated play and were able to hit a variety of shots in their matches. Sebastian, at No. 1, played a tough match and came out on the wrong end of some deuce games.”
The Trojans lost both doubles matches, but got a few punches in.
Jackson Yandell and Dominik Kooy won five games at No. 1 doubles and Kaleb Brege and Bryce Baugh won three games at No. 2 doubles.
“One and two doubles played some of their best tennis yet, competing in every game and hitting several great shots,” Busscher said. “Unfortunately, they just could not string more of those games together and came up a bit short.”
