The Fruitport golf team had two different story lines at Wednesday’s Whitehall Invitational.
The most exciting news was that senior Mylee Mineni took first place out of 73 golfers in the tournament, shooting an 81. She beat second-place Kete Posey of Big Rapids by four shots.
Mineni’s score was the best of her varsity career. She was steady throughout the round, shooting a 41 on the front nine and 40 on the back.
“She worked hard in the offseason to improve her game, and continues to work at her game,” Fruitport Coach Brenda Hansen said about Mineni.
The rest of the Trojan squad, which is largely comprised of new golfers, did surprisingly well, finishing ninth out of 13 teams. Whitehall won the tournament in a tiebreaker with second-place Reeths-Puffer.
Freshman Maddie Anderson shot a 125 for the Trojans, followed by senior Kenzie Pate (140), senior Lainey Bol (131), junior Ave Powell (155) and junior Kendall Lee (131).
“The girls had a good day, and they recognized what aspects of their game we need to focus on a little more at practice next week before our next jamboree,” Hansen said. “Throughout the day the girls gained more confidence in their game and continued to improve.”
