Fruitport volleyball team beats rival Spring Lake in annual ‘Battle on the Boardwalk’ outdoor event in Grand Haven

Fruitport did have some success against its rival Spring Lake on Thursday.

It didn’t occur on the football field, where the gridiron Trojans struggled against the state-ranked Lakers in their season opener.

But the Fruitport volleyball team had a much easier time, downing Spring Lake in straight sets, 25-17, 25-15, in the annual Battle on the Boardwalk outdoor event in Grand Haven.

The Trojans did not have as much luck in their two earlier matches in the tournament, however.

They lost to Mona Shores 25-18, 25-18, then fell to Grand Haven 25-23, 25-6.

“This was a fun event, as always,” said Fruitport Coach Nicole Bayle. “I love our girls getting this opportunity to be showcased in an outdoor game.

“Our team is growing and learning to win and compete together, and today was just another step in the right direction.”
