HUDSONVILLE — The streaking Fruitport Trojans continued their winning ways on Thursday, capping off a series sweep of Hudsonville Unity Christian with a 12-4 win on the road.

Fruitport, powered by a six-run fourth inning, picked up its seventh straight victory.

Aside from great pitching, timely hitting and sound defense — and the fabled Lucky Log — the Trojans have had another element working in their favor during the streak — team chemistry.

“It’s just a tight-knit group,” Coach Nick Reed said. “They just get along. They’re unselfish, they root for one another, they’re playing together. When they get down, they pick each other up.”

Senior Brady French said sticking together as a team has helped the Trojans find their groove after struggling a bit earlier in the season.

“We got off to a little slow start to the season, but really we just stayed together,” he said. “I think that was our biggest thing. We all stayed as a group and we kept grinding in practice.”

The Trojans got contributions from most of the lineup on Thursday, with eight different players tallying at least one hit and scoring at least one run.

“We have a motto that we say, ‘Nine is one,’” said French, who collected three hits on Thursday. “It takes nine guys to make a full team. You really just need everyone contributing, that’s how you win ball games.”

Avery Lambers took the bump for Fruitport and put in a strong effort. He threw 6 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on nine hits while walking four and striking out seven.

“Avery could be one of the top pitchers in the area — if he wasn’t already one of the top catchers in the area,” Coach Reed said. “Pitching has been huge for us, including Avery.

“Guys are stepping up, we’re throwing strikes, our defense is phenomenal and then we’re getting timely hitting.”

Fruitport took an early lead with three runs in the first inning. Christian Kennedy led off with a double, then scored on a throwing error on a Jax Flynn bunt. Flynn came in to score on a single by French, who then came home on a hit by Braxton Ward.

After Unity scored single runs in the first and second to get within 3-2, the Trojans added another run in the third on a fielder’s choice play that scored French.

Unity added a run in the third before Fruitport blew things open with a six-run fourth inning to make it 10-3.

The Trojans tallied five hits in the fourth, including an RBI hit from Flynn, a two-run single from Trevor Rusnak and a two-run double from Thomas Anderson. French drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Fruitport added two runs in the sixth — coming on an RBI single by Flynn and a sacrifice fly from Ryan Bosch — to make it 12-3. Unity Christian scored a run in the seventh to make it a 12-4 final.
