FRUITPORT — The Fruitport softball team kept battling and won a back-and-forth Game 2 against Greenville on Thursday – overcoming three separate deficits – to complete an impressive sweep of a doubleheader against the Yellowjackets.

Fruitport scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning — all with two outs — to cap off the 13-8 win.

“We did a lot of little things well tonight,” said Fruitport Coach Bob Dorman, noting some solid defense from his team in the late innings. “We ran the bases, we stayed aggressive running bases. I’m very pleased.

“That sixth inning, they showed what they’re about, which was good. I told them one’s not enough, so they went and got five. It was great to see.”

Fruitport’s Brylee DeWitt had the go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, her third hit of the game.

“I just wanted to get the hit for the team,” DeWitt said about stepping up in the clutch. “It’s all about the team. I wanted to do whatever I could at the plate to get my teammates in and put us in a better spot to win the game.”

Brooklynn Russell pitched both games for Fruitport and reached a milestone in the circle during Game 1, recording her 100th strikeout of the season.

“It means a lot to me,’” Russell said. “I’ve been working really hard since the offseason for this goal. I have a goal of 150 strikeouts, I think I can hit it. It’s just good knowing I have my team behind me and they all support me.”

With the pair of wins Thursday, Fruitport is now 11-9 on the season. The Trojans are 10-3 outside of conference play, but 1-6 in the very challenging O-K Blue.

“The conference is tough, it is,” Dorman said. “But we’ve just got to go play that sixth inning (of Game 2) for seven innings. I really feel we can take that momentum.”

Greenville scored three runs in the top of the first inning of Game 2 to go up early, but the Trojans responded.

Russell reached on an error, then scored on a double by Ash Olson, who then scored on a single by DeWitt. A sacrifice fly from Kalli Tawney scored DeWitt to tie the game at 3-3.

The Yellowjackets plated three more runs in the second to go up 6-3, but again Fruitport bounced back, rallying for four runs of their own in the frame.

Kya Tawney, Russell and DeWitt all had hits, while Marlee Veltman and Olson had walks. Russell, DeWitt and Kendall Lee each drove in a run in the second.

Fruitport’s lead didn’t last long, as Greenville scored two more in the third to go up 8-7.

The Trojans evened the score in the fourth with an RBI single from Russell to score Tatum Anderson, who had a leadoff double. The game remained tied 8-8 until the sixth.

Fruitport’s winning rally started with a one-out walk to Russell, who then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. With two outs, DeWitt singled to score Russell. Lee then reached on an error and DeWitt came in to score on a wild pitch. Kalli Tawney worked a walk, Maddie Prout reached on an error, scoring Lee, and Kya Tawney smacked a two-run double to cap off the big inning.

DeWitt led the offense with three hits and three RBIs while Kya Tawney had three hits and two RBIs.

Russell had two hits, a walk, four stolen bases, three runs and two RBIs. She pitched all seven innings, allowing five earned runs on nine hits with four walks and two strikeouts. She retired the last 11 batters she faced.

In Game 1, Fruitport trailed 4-1 before scoring five runs in the fourth inning and two in the fifth to take the win 8-5.

Kya Tawney led the offense with three hits, including a double, and four RBIs. DeWitt had a single, a double, two steals and two runs. Kalli Tawney had two hits, while Russell, Lee, Prout and Maddie Kohnke had one each.
