The Fruitport softball team continued to heat up before districts by winning the championship of its own Larry Cantu Memorial Tournament on Saturday.

The Trojans defeated Mona Shores 3-1 and Comstock Park 20-10 in a slugfest to win the trophy.

Fruitport has now won two tournament championships in the past few weeks (including the Mona Shores Invitational) and is 8-3 in its last 11 games.

The Trojans scored all three of their runs against Mona Shores in the second inning.

Kendall Lee singled, Kalli Tawney reached on an error, then Maddy Prout, Kya Tawney, Maddy Kohnke and Tatum Anderson all hit singles to produce the runs.

Brooklynn Russell pitched with win for Fruitport, scattering five hits with three strikeouts in a complete-game effort.

Fruitport had to dig itself out of a big hole in the championship game after Comstock Park scored six runs in the first inning.

The Trojans started battling back in the second inning by scoring four runs. Maddie Prout walked, the next two batters were hit by pitches, Anderson reached on an error, Russell doubled, Ash Olson reached on an error, then Brylee DeWitt and Lee each hit singles to produce the runs.

Fruitport added two more runs in both the third and fourth innings and five more in the fifth to suddenly take a 13-6 lead and control of the game.

Russell got another win on the mound in the title game with relief help from Kohnke.eddie
