The Fruitport boys golf team had its best finish of the season on Wednesday, finishing in third place, one point out of second, at the Greater Muskegon Athletic Association City Golf Tournament at Oakridge Golf Club.

The Trojans came in with a team score of 351, just behind Reeths-Puffer, which shot a 350. Mona Shores won the event with a team score of 340.

Two Fruitport golfers finished in the top 10 in the individual standings and won medals at the tournament.

Chase Sullivan shot an 85 and finished fourth while Macen Benderman shot an 87 and finished 10th.

Cole Woodard shot an 89 for Fruitport, followed by Tyler Carlson (90) and Andres Cribley-Cotto (96). Reeths-Puffer’s Dylan Panozzo took first place with an 80.

“Both Chase and Macen started slowly then had some good holes through the back of the round,” said Fruitport Coach Aaron Gregory. “It was good to see them do well. They didn’t hit a lot of greens but kind of kept grinding it out. They managed to minimize some mistakes here and there and didn’t give up.”

While the Trojans felt like they could have done better as a team, the top three result was a refreshing change from the brutal competition they face in the talent-heavy O-K Blue conference, where Fruitport has typically finished near the bottom of the standings in conference jamborees.

“We left a lot of strokes on the course,” said Fruitport Coach Aaron Gregory. “I am proud of the way they finished but look forward to the day we don’t allow one bad shot or one bad hole to last into the next shot or hole.

“This is the best finish we have had in the city tournament since I started coaching and it was fun to see the players realizing that they can compete. Hopefully, we can build on this for the rest of this season and for next year.”eddie
